Nowadays, no one lacks information but time. One of the best sources to learn from is books. There are billions of books to read and learn from it. Unfortunately, you can't read all books. But you can of course ask yourself a question about why you want to read this book. Once, you have a reason to read the book, practice the following points to read the book effectively and learn from it.
Make a reading goal before you start reading always define a goal (what you want to learn from the book or what you expect from it) before reading a book and by doing so you will save time and energy by getting an escape from irrelevant books.
  • Review the author, title, and synopsis of the book
Once clear with your main objective of reading the book, skim through the author's profile, title, and abstract of the book.
  • Flip through the pages to get an overview of topics
You can go through the pages and get an idea about the topics, without jumping into thorough reading.
  • Read the concluding paragraph before the intro to get an idea of the topic
Starting with the summary can help you get an overview of the topic and if you later find it needful you can read thoroughly.
  • Try selective reading for lengthy academic works
Suppose you have a Communication Skill book having 1000+ pages, but your main purpose is to learn public speaking then instead of reading the whole book that time go and read public speaking only. Of course, you can read the whole book if you have time, but you have to be clear with your purpose and make priority accordingly.
  • Do active reading by taking notes
It is recommended to read the book with sketch, pencil, or crayons because you can mark or underline the important points while reading. It helps you to review the points easily.
You can also take notes to grab whatever you are reading. Personally, I prefer to take notes and highlight the points while reading.
  • Avoid distractions while reading
Imagine you are highly focused and deep diving into active book reading, and suddenly your phone notification pops up with a sound. Now, you try to convince your mind to look for it later on, but you are getting arousal to check it now only. You are now distracted. In this situation, you can write the task, to check the notification, on a piece of paper and head back to your reading. Also, you can keep your phone's notifications off and sit in a minimalistic and well-organized place with a peaceful environment.
But always remember to take a piece of paper to write the random thoughts in your mind while you read. Also, sit with all the necessary items for your reading purpose.
  • Think about what you have read
If you pause for some time and try to think about whatever you have read, you will have a better understanding and your reading ability will improve.
  • Try to connect yourself to the book based on your experiences or knowledge
  • Take a break when you are unable to understand
It is always better to take a break and give your body some time to relax and refill the energy rather than forcing and pushing yourself into reading.

In conclusion, reading a book is one of the most important things to do in our life. But the ability to read and learn from the relevant book is most important. Remember to follow the suggestions mentioned in the post. Have a goal before reading a book. Get an idea of the author's profile, title, and overview of the book. Scan through the topics and summary. Look for selective reading, if possible, with taking notes. Get rid of distractions as much as possible. Try to think about the content you read and connect yourself to it based on your experience and knowledge. Last but not least take a break if required.
